Sofia

Sofia is the capital of Bulgaria - a city with 1.6 million residents. It is located in Western Bulgaria, at the foot of Mountain Vitosha, and it is the administrative, cultural, economic, and educational center of the country.

One of the oldest cities in Europe, its history dates back before the 7th century BC. The well-preserved town walls (especially their substructures) from antiquity date back before the 7th century BC, when Thracians established their city next to the most important and highly respected mineral spring, still functioning today. Sofia has had several names  - Serdika, Sredec, etc., in the different periods of its existence, and remnants from the city's past can still be seen today alongside modern landmarks.

In its old and long history Sofia always has had an important role and place in the region as a center and a cross-road between the East and the West, between the northern and southern lands on the Balkan peninsula.

Another interesting characteristic of Sofia are its many green places and its closeness to  Mountain Vitosha, a national park. The "Borisova gradina" is one of the most beautiful parks in the city. In 1882 the mayor of Sofia brought a Swiss gardener - Daniel Neff who created the first plan of the park and organized the planting. The park has many beautiful paths, cafes and an artificial lake with boats - Ariana lake. There are also many other parks, city gardens and tree lines in Sofia.

Sofia has a very dynamic and wild night life - there are many clubs, discos and pubs which work until late in the night and can be suitable for different tastes for music and having fun. Many people go out very often and the places are full even on Thursday, especially discos and bars.
